This page will show you what elements of delay you can claim for, what documentation you need and when your claim is likely to be processed.
What is departure delay travel insurance?
Departure delay travel insurance provides two forms of cover in the event that the departure from the UK of your aircraft, ship or ferry is delayed beyond its scheduled time of departure. These are 'trip disruption' and 'trip cancellation'.
Am I eligible to make a departure delay travel insurance claim?
Provided you have already checked-in, the policy will provide you with a small amount of compensation for each complete 12 hour period that you are delayed. This is called 'trip disruption' and is designed purely to contribute towards the cost of food and refreshments.
If you are delayed for more than 24 hours, then 'trip cancellation' will cover the pre-paid cost the holiday or trip that have not been refunded to you by the tour operator, airline or other supplier, should you decide not to travel, and cancel your trip.
You may be eligible to claim if your departure is delayed if:
- You are at the airport, station or port;
- You have contacted your booking agent, tour provider, shipping line, airline or transport provider for a written confirmation of the delay. This will need to include the scheduled departure time, what the departure time actually was, and the reason for the delayed journey.
