When we travel on holiday, our suitcases and bags contain everything that we will be using for the duration of our trip. Imagine the potential worry you'd face if your case never appeared on the luggage carousel due to delay, or your items were lost/damaged while on holiday.
This page explains what you need to know in order to begin your personal possessions travel insurance claim, including eligibility and supporting documents.
What is personal possessions travel insurance?
Personal possessions travel insurance provides cover in the event that your personal possessions are lost, stolen or damaged whist on your holiday or trip. However there are limits to the maximum amount the policy will pay out in respect of any single item; valuable items for example, should be insured 365 days of the year on an 'All Risks Extension' as part of your Home Contents Insurance.
Am I eligible to make a personal possessions travel insurance claim?
The policy will cover:
- Personal possessions up to the limit on the policy. This is then divided into inner limits which include clothes, footwear, luggage, eyewear, jewellery, and watches, depending on what policy you have. Your policy wording will clearly explain the total amount you are able to claim for within each section.
- Essential items (such as a change of clothes or toiletries) if your possessions are delayed by more than 12 hours on your outbound trip.
The policy will not cover under this section:
- Duty free items;
- Your bag/contents if stolen from a beach or lido;
- Your gadgets;
- Contact/corneal lenses;
- Valuable items.
If your personal possessions have been delayed or damaged by an airline or other transport provider you must ensure that you have obtained a report from them confirming the delay or damage. You will also be expected to obtain a police report in respect of any lost or stolen items.
You must also be aware that travel insurance policies are not 'new for old' cover. All claims are settled based upon the second hand value of any items that are claimed for, and not on their replacement or sentimental value. Please refer to www.tif-plc.co.uk/wearandtear/ for more information.
You will be expected to provide proof of ownership/purchase of any items worth £50 or more. We understand that for some older items you may not still have the receipt, therefore photographic evidence may be sufficient in certain cases.
